Okay, so we had some fun over McCain calling Pakistan a neighbor of Iraq. Now, apparently, Obama has gone ahead and called ”Israel a friend of Israel.” Obviously, a gaffe. But media furor would have you believing that Obama has called for nuclear strikes against the Jewish homeland or something.
In fact, I simply don’t get why the media is so obsessed with candidates making small mistakes. In this high pressure environment where media follows their every step and campaign meanders on for months, any candidate is liable to commit a few mistakes. Is that a good enough reason to decide who should be the American president?
In fact, here’s the thing: a president’s expertise in a particular field, from economic policy for foreign affairs, is subjected to intense scrutiny, Apparently, Obama is stronger in economic matters while McCain’s expertise lies in foreign affairs. In my opinion, it is an idiotic way of evaluating a candidate. With the world becoming increasingly complex and with specialization the name of the game, it is just plain nonsensical to expect a presidential candidate to understand all complex policy matters. In fact, the president’s role in the policy making process is extremely limited; it is the vast government machinery which does that job.
What should be looked at instead are broad positions–even at the cost of being simplistic–which candidates take: free trade or protectionist or long term foreign policy goals. There are simply too many unknowns in the actual policy making process to justify detailed policy reports which are likely to be discarded as soon as the elections are over. Second, look at the advisers: it is they who will guide the president through complex policies. You can pretty much make out which way the president will swing by giving a close look to the company he keeps.
So stop obsessing over mistakes–instead, look at what they are actually going to do

“instead, look at what are actually going to do”
How?
Mr McCain’s expertise lies in foreign affairs
{chuckle..chuckle}…..sure, it’s quite vivid
his expertise does keep in tandem in Map Making too!
I feel the media should continue to subject them with a close and unsparing scrutiny…..ELSE THEY BECOME MORE RAMPANTLY CARELESS…come on, one of them would be heading “Uncle Sam n witherin Americana dreams” n he would be influential in World-Global affairs. these men have to meet the much-hyped Expectations from an individual at the helm of affairs, they should be accurate (dnt give this blah blah, no one is perfect) in whatever they say or do. they are
- still competing candidates. Not a full-fledged President (of course Bush leads the gang of dumb fools)
- not from a developing n strugglung third world country like India
- over-loaded by Information, Machines are at work
the competing candidate, if not an expert, ideally should have some kind of POV, especially in this age of Knowledge economies
@ “look at what are actually going to do”….
Crystal-GAZING?????
I agree that nitpicking shouldn’t be the norm but in some cases when such nitpicking leads to a pattern, it can be problematic for the candidate and quite informational for the public.
McCain keeps harping on his foreign policy credentials based on being a POW and serving on the foreign relations senate committee so you would least expect him to make numerous gaffes (Shia-Sunni confusion, fighting Al-Qeada fighters from Iran, and this Iraq-Pakistan one) in this field as compared to economic policy where he has admitted to having little expertise.
So stop obsessing over mistakes–instead, look at what are actually going to do
what fun is that going to be ? how is the 24-hr news channel supposed to fill with ‘actual’ material ?
Jeez Patrix chill I realize you have a crush on Obama, but retain some semblance of adulthood for Haven’s sake.
Yep, agreed that this amount of nit-picking is not good at all!
Just shows how the media is craving for some headlines!
