Dear Imagined Readers

Please explain,

What is South Asian Community? In other words, what is common between Indians and Pakistanis for example? If you claim common heritage, it was destroyed by one of the most violent partitions in the history of mankind.

As an erudite blogger once told me, we should realize that some people are ”just not like us.”

  1. Alankrita,

Let’s be clear here. You are talking Indian community in the West or raising a question about India it self?

  2. I am talking about nomenclature.. not Indian community in the west, east or any place… Just using your simile to explain but as confusedly muddling everything..
can e forget this happened- the whole talk? please.. for my sanity please…

I find the whole South-Asian identity somewhat silly too (though if it works for others, so be it). What’s interesting is that the majority of South Asians are Indians (or ABCDs of Indian origin – I think the C is very apt ; ) ) – and taking the lead (big brother) – with very few members of other SA countries being part of the mix. Seems to me that both the left and the right have the same dream, though one calls it a South Asian confederation (is chachaji still posting at SM? I stopped visiting that forum a long time ago) and the other akhand bharat. Go figure.

And the fact that there may be some commonality in how people look and the food we eat has little to do with other deeper political and social issues, where there are major differences – conveniently ignored by the South Asians.
