From The Times of India ”discussion” forum,
But in Bangalore this May Day at a political party function, Karnataka labour minister Iqbal Ansari dropped a bombshell of such intensity that it wouldn’t be surprising if he gets blown away by the fallout. He said his government would put in place a law that ensures that women do not work night shifts from July. He believes women should not be at the workplace beyond 8 pm but exempted the IT/BPO sectors and essential services[link]
Who is this madman? Its unbelievable that an elected minister should even contemplate such a regressive law. That he is shameless enough to announce it in a public forum is an indicator of the depths this country has fallen to. Welcome to the Indian Taliban!
What next? Should women wear jeans?
Pah!!
Update- It seems they actually passed it, at least in the Assembly! I have no doubt whatsoever that the Karnataka assembly comprises of morons. If that sounds harsh, so be it.

Baka
it’s just the “work” Mr Ansari is hinting at. Shopping (window), Pubbing, Clubbin & Blendn, Driving, Torturing men/boy friends, Barista*ing, Movies etc etc, women can carry after 8PM.
Do you think we women really care about this pearls of concern? he would have said this in the overpowering heat.
he may give second a thought about this inane brainstorm.
yes I agree with the article, he should plant more women traffic officers, like that lady-bully on the airport road, across the city…n women drivers behind the wheels for the cabs that ferry cybercoolies up n down n across the streets. n women auto drivers, women bus drivers, exclusive hours at movies, women bartenders, women xclsuive strip-flames etc etc. can be pondered …see, it’s more like an Empowerment programme!
I feel, considering the no.of software professionals (men) murdered, they should be thrown out of the offices at the strike of 8 (PM).
@Confused: I notice that you just said:
Everyone else, please remember this epochal moment. We shall come back to it in a few months.
Rohit, since this is a May Day story, please allow me the liberty to post my own report here – from clear across the globe.
You are already aware of the event, I invite your readers to take a look. I will later write a comment explaining a bit more about what exactly went on.

Another gem from this guy
“The country will not be able to progress without the labour class, just like the body cannot function without the brain” (http://www.hindu.com/2006/03/13/stories/2006031321400400.htm)
that Ansari boy forgot something extremely essential
if we,dearest inhabitants of mother loam, get our respective ass back home before 8PM, the telephone n mobile lines would invariably get jammed n choked for further breath as most of us are consistent n stauch naggers, n we nag those poor men to return home early….productivity drops, crime rate at wee hrs of night witnesses healthy a spike n the population sees a freser perspective…Ansari boy has to withdraw his pearls of wisdom n concern..instead put us in Karate classes, Taekwondo sessions, sizzlin Salsa dance trips….anyway, most political leaders talk, walk the talk and then forget what they uttered next day…huh!
yes exactly as jyothsnay says, the good thing sometimes is that these ministers don’t act on what they say.
But then with the party hour in bangalore extended to 1:30 from the 11 ‘o clock, it’s only good if i can convince my manager about 8 pm being the deadline for my working hours
Jyo,
Yeah, I think you should simply take over the administration.
Vivek,
heh. And I suspect you will remind me.
Ruchira,
Please feel free.
Barb, Ravi,
Thanks for the link. Man’s a freak case, rt!
Jyo,
Yes!!!
fafridi,
Don’t be so sure. They actually passed it.
Huh! is correct!
Came across this and a few other reactions after the “correction” I saw in the papers today. Theres a funny one on bangaloredaze.blogspot.com
