Bob Woolmer Dies!

Pakistan’s embattled coach, Bob Woolmer, has died in a Kingston hospital.

Bob Woolmer, the Pakistan coach, has died in a Kingston hospital after being found unconscious in his hotel room hours after his side’s elimination from the World Cup. “Bob Woolmer died in hospital,” a team spokesman told reporters. He was 58.[link]

Though the cause of death is still unclear, one wonders if it had anything to do with Pakistan’s ignominious exit from the world cup. Even at the best of times, coaching Pakistan is not easy and after the defeat to Ireland–the knives are truly out.

Whatever maybe the reason, this is a big loss to the cricketing world. Woolmer was an outstanding coach, responsible for introducing the use of computers to cricket coaching. While the defeat to Ireland must have rankled, in a way, it was poetic justice for Woolmer who as ICC high-performance manager had no small role in the bringing the minnows to the position where they could challenge the mighty nations.

R.I.P

Update- The shocked cricketing world has come to together to pay its tribute to Woolmer. The Pakistanis led by President Musharraf have paid rich tributes to their coach.

Update2- A report from New Zealand claims it was ‘’stress or heart attack” which killed Woolmer. Ironic. Only a couple of days back, Woolmer was discussing how stressful coaching Pakistan can be.

How is this “ironic”? One thing logically follows from the other. (Sorry to nitpick!)

  10. It was his time. He served Pakistan very well. He was in love with Pakistan and wanted to elevate our team’s performance.

  11. Wasnt he the guy who introduced hi-tech cheating into the game ?? (remember , South Africa, wireless concealed earphones ?)

Anyway, RIP. He sure was a good coach, with amazing ideas. (Eg. keeper standing between the stumps and the thrower, for runouts, instead of behind the stumps for the split second time gain.. )
