David Beckham is leaving Real Madrid and joining Major League Soccer for a deal reportedly worth as much as $250 million over a period of 5 years. That’s $50 million a year!
But is he worth it? King Kaufman thinks so
He’ll certainly score tons of goals in the MLS, which is practically tailor-made for his chief skill, scoring on dead balls. He’ll put fannies in seats in MLS’s group of soccer-only stadiums — the best idea the league has had. And he’ll put the league in the headlines, on the highlight shows and in the bar-stool conversations in a way teenage sensation Freddy Adu has not done. But his long-term contribution to MLS may be his ability to attract other international superstars to what is seen internationally as a minor league, a place world-class players can go to play out the string at the end of their careers.[Link]
It’s an interesting point about international superstars joining MLS. I don’t see it happening too often. Also, what Bekham brings to the table is much bigger than his football skills, in fact, quite clearly the premium is mostly for his non-field exploits. How many other footballers possess the same charisma?
At least, Kaufman does a nice job of putting Beckham’s salary into perspective.
I like to bring these dollar numbers down to my reality by dividing them by an amount of time so small I can recognize them as an actual amount of money. So if Beckham were working 40 hours a week year-round, he’d be making $192,307.69 a day, or $24,038.46 an hour. If you decided to hire him right when you started reading this sentence, and you read about as fast as I do, and then you decided to fire him when you got to the period, you’d owe him $66.77.
That’s a lot of money.
Update-N. Ram takes a break from batting for the Communists and ruminates on Beckham’s transfer. He does actually make some sense. Hint!

…and the republicans are uncomfortable with Democrats raising the minimum wage to $7.25 an hr…..unfair world indeed!
Easy boy, ease off! this move may fulfill Beckham’s long nurturing ambition – ” I wanna be a movie star, I wanna be *more popular, I wanna be a movie star,I wanna be noticed, I wanna go far…I wanna make money, I wanna live in glamour”..this whole time-bound assignment of “making football gather more eyeballs and footfalls” in US of A piled on “elegantly crafted” Beck’s shoulders seems a false spring forever!
but..but, lets’ not ignore ths possibility “men in US certainly would get heated up further.women would be found *nekkid* as jaybirds” *(what a learning I got from Tom Robbins n felt the need to share with each one of you)
would look forward to see Beck as “bovine custodial officer”, i.e. the quintessential American hero, along wth his frail birdie “Vic” in many a glittering n mind-numbin Ads.US of A got one more celebrity couple,Paris Hilton.. mind moving your butt a bit to the left side..?tq

Beck’s brand equity could be xtended to
“Beck” ham-burger….light on wallet, heavy on stomach filler one can have while watching a football game…
Although Hamburg, Germany is credited for the precursor to the hamburger, the origins of the first “modern” hamburger are often debated among scholars…

White Castle is the oldest American hamburger fast food restaurant chain….therefore,
Beck-ham burgers could be offered up as a small token of gratitude from the Queens & Kings of United world
>> a place world-class players can go to play out the string at the end of their careers
Maybe Beckham is at the end of his career
Orchid,
World wasn’t ever supposed to be fair. Btw, I am sure you understand, it’s not the same thing.
Jyo,
I think every sports need Beckhams. They may not bring much to the table as far as skills go but they are priceless in spreading the sport.
Beckham might actually make football popular in U.S.A.
Shadows,
Maybe. But still 250 millions $, that’s a lot.

responding to your comment “Beck is doing his bit to make Football popular in US of A”
I happen to watch see Matthew McConaughey on Oprah… (People magazine describes him as “chivalrous,” “passionate” and 2005’s “Sexiest Man Alive!)..well of course, he gives a tough match to our fav George Clooney on “twinkling eyes”
…..
Matthew is a huge fan of his alma mater’s football team (baseball to be precise), the University of Texas Longhorns. UT defeated the University of Southern California in the 2006 Rose Bowl for the National Championship. Matthew was there for the big moment, cheering them on to victory. …read on
would Beck match this pasisonate wavelength that inspire players? I sincerely doubt!
