Sai Baba devotees are sensitive to the ‘Afro-haired conjuror’ sneer. Over a decade ago, the magician PC Sorcar was refused entry into Sai Baba’s presence. He went under a false name and when the Baba miraculously produced a sandesh, Sorcar returned the compliment by miraculously producing a rasgulla. The Baba began shouting and Sorcar was physically evicted from the ashram.
Vir Sanghvi in a delightful writeup on a fraud called Sathya Sai Baba. Anyone whose claim to Godliness relies on conjuring up a few simple magician tricks is a fraud. But the problem is not that he is a fraud. There are many such charlatans around, and it really doesn’t matter if there is one more.
The problem is that this dude is a paedophile. There are simply too many accusations flying around to disbelieve all of them.
In any other country, this dude would have been in jail. In India, the high and mighty bow before him.
That is the problem. And the real tragedy.

Hindus should be more careful about letting atheists and foreigners who are ignorant (and may very well be white supremacists with an agenda) bash their religion and religious figures without thinking things through more carefully.
