dear Shadows
HATRED and DISUNITY wont take us anywhere. there’s a diabolical, sinister, negative religious fanaticism raging its head like a monster, and it is striking all of us eveywhere
but think ....what's being propagated or what all of us are consuming is just one side of the fence... are not we missing out on the idealogoy/true intention of the silent majority of Islam..? who would voice that?who would address that resentment sleeping silently wth us?
It's not giving up religion but certain practices.religion is a key ingredient in one's identity/character...but throw away those outdated, medieval robes....

let religion, race, nationality and other factors die and wither…these are all developed by grown-ups,the most idiotic creatures I have ever met
==========

Jyothsna,
Of course, I would do that. I would readily give it up. But then, if you think practically, Islam is far more fundamentalist, and it will not be easy. Do you think anyone in the world would give up religion, if the other is not willing to give it up, and continue destroying you in the name of religion?

Mariam,
how easy to blame it on the dictators. :)

Confused,
Well, what you say is actually right. I should be concerned and agitated, but then, I admit I am not.. there is slight remorse, a slight guilt, a little whirlpool of angst. But then I realize who is responsible for all this, and I dont have any hope left. After all, isnt muslims killing anyone else(incl other muslims) secular?

Another intervention by a foreign country would mean an attack on Islam, so nothing can be done about it. I dont think anything is ever going to come out of it in Sudan. And Arabs would stay away, because they are the ones killing the blacks, so that they have the whole of Sudan to themselves.

Ethnic cleansing anyone??

why do we have to give a religious hue to this MAN MADE DISASTER ?>/i>

Well, religion is man made, although I am not going to argue the divine angle. By the way, a child getting to live and mourn his parents is perhaps among the best stories out of Darfur chaos. Usually what happens is ... let's not go there.

why do we have to give a religious hue to this MAN MADE DISASTER ?
who have given them the right to snatch away smiles from little children with a lethal blow (a child does not even understand what's the conflict is ?)..he/she cries for milk and his/her mother...
who have given them the right to displace homes and expose the lives to both man made and nature's driven calamities?
to make things worse, Sudanese government places obstacles in the way of the international relief organizations...that means it's a deliberate effort to enhance DEATH (everyone knows!)

.....For months, *deflected international attention to the increasingly grim news from Darfur by claiming that the militias were rogue elements outside its control. Eyewitnesses have long reported, however, that government helicopters are involved in supplying militias and that security and military chiefs are directing their activities. The involvement of the air force would be clear evidence of high-level approval. Human Rights Watch has obtained what appear to be Sudanese government documents that confirm the regime's deep complicity in the militias' activities.....
http://www.merip.org/mero/mero072204.html

...I am incapacious for the emotional space...but
I am awed by the undying human spirit...

...Nevertheless, the people of Darfur are survivors of an atrocity -- children, who'll be haunted for the rest of their lives by what they have seen; fathers, living with the guilt that they couldn't prevent it; and mothers, struggling to carry on.

I first read about Darfur here. What else is new? No one stopped US including Middle East from invading Iraq. Muslims are not that organized as West make them appear. Most Muslim countries are ruled by dictators and they only care about themselves. Until these dictators are safe and no one is threatening their power, we will not hear anything about Africa or any other remote part.

BTW, have you read this? He isn’t even regretting right as we saw how American money (via ISI) pumped to NWFP to open Madarsas for spiritual guidance and camps for military training.

Neha,

True. But what is surprising is that Muslim world which takes offense at minor issues is so silent.

Shadows,

Do you really think that we should be agitated by all this.. after all that we have gone through?? When we ourselves have faced a genocide far worse than this

Yes. We should be bothered. You cant blame those who are being killed in Sudan for what eveyone else does. This is murder of innocent civilians.

Gaurav,

True, and as the article points out, many even refuse to understand that actually even the killers are Muslims.

And hey, some sane people do read this blog. :P

Adnan,

No doubt, Africa matters less. Bu the point is why is Muslim world silent? Is it because the victims are black and killers Arabic? I think the article i linked to makes the same point.

Jyo,

True but you msut remember, what ever little you hear about Darfur is because of International media and journalists like Kristoff. Western media has been far more concerned than say Asian media.

And you are welcome.

Vishnuvyas,

True. Also, I think a lot of people dont know that victims are Muslims. Alot think it is western propagonda which must be resisted.

Barb,

No doubt, Darfur offers no easy targets.

On a sidennote-Sudan is actually pretty rich in mineral reserves and such like. Only if it had some governance too.

Confused,

It is very simple. The Darfur massacre is yet to find synergies with one of the popular movements of the day such as impeach Bush, cool the planet, save cheetahs, support Palestine, exterminate zionists etc. etc. The save Muslim angle doesn't cut it either - the killers are Muslims as well. Reuters wouldn't be interested in photo-ops since the photos from Darfur don't look half as good as the stage managed beautiful photos from Lebanon (how many were killed there? Like a dozen?) The Arab world usually couldn't be bothered as long as Islam is with the winning side.

One way to save the day would be to throw in the big oil into the picture. For instance, western style oil exploration leads to slaughter. Unfortunately there is no Exxon Mobil derrick to be photographed yet, and this wouldn't cut it. Furthermore, if oil was the issue, why wouldn't the sparring (or rather the slaughtering and slaughteree factions) just get along and split the petro?

A better angle would be to somehow implicate Bush. Simultaneously, you have to refrain from any mention that the marauding armies have anything to do with Islam. The angle will play out nice. Bush and his imperialist cronies want oil. They are sitting in the sidelines so the natives are massacred and oil fields are appropriated.

I believe the last angle was already played. Alahs, in the din of American domestic politics (high stakes), Darfur is but a distant cry folks would rather ignore for the moment.

Why Indeed?

Answer :
Collective Myopia.

Darfur doesn't matter to bleeding heart liberals of the west, to the Indian communist protesting Saddam Hussein, to those who would condemn about Palestine and Hezbollah.

Btw, why doesn't the balochi massacares ever get media attention? Balochi's don't matter. If it wasn't for the US involvment in Iraq, Kurds wouldn't have mattered.

But Kashmir matters, Palestine matters, because they can all be potrayed as Muslim-vs-Non-Muslim. Oppressor vs Oppressed, and in the modern world, its always been the norm to potray muslims as the oppressed. When infact, they start slaughtering their own brethren their thesis of muslims oppressed by evil corporations in conjunction with greedy western nations falls apart. So, they take the best approach which keeps their sanity and egos intact - the head in the sands approach.
