A thought provoking article in NYT asks: Has Europe given up on Islam?
Europe appears to be crossing an invisible line regarding its Muslim minorities: more people in the political mainstream are arguing that Islam cannot be reconciled with European values.
There is no doubt that Europe is growing increasingly frustrated with its Muslim minorities. This is no longer confined to people on the far right, but the political and intellectual mainstream, the likes of Martin Amis are beginning to wonder if European values can ever be reconciled with the values its increasingly militant Muslim population.
Of course, this sense of alienation and animosity grows with every little event. The Pope’s recent comments evoked much fury, so much so that some idiots proved how Islam was a non-violent religion by killing a nun! This also provides a convenient handle to the far-right, they know to provoke a violent backlash all they have do is to publish some cartoons and they are increasingly adopting such tactics.

As far as I know women in Iran and Saudi Arabia can’t travel without Men’s permission. Apparently everyone should have at least one able male member to accompany them all the time. [Side note - They gave Male escort service a new meaning]. In Saudi Arabia women can’t even go out without a male. Maybe it’s not a big issue for rich oil tycoons who can afford South Asian chauffer for all their 10 wives and hundreds of children but for simple middle class family it is quite impossible to follow this rule.
After this horrific incident world thought Saudi would relax their dress code laws but we were dreaming.

Why do I not “gives” the sources ?? Good diversionary tactic. Asking for sources for something that is common knowledge. Is the drastic reduction in the population of Hindus in Pakistan (even after the Partition) a good enough indication?
A simple google search will reveal how islam considers nonmuslims to be inferior, and the other excesses and genocides committed by them. Dont ask me for sources of such accepted facts…

General thoughts,..
I wonder why desi blogosphere has this strange old habit of asking “where is the proof” for every little single thing that is common knowledge.
For example, its common knowledge what islam thinks of others, and their hypocrisy. Still, any illogical and non-factual statements (made regularly by the likes of Dilip dsoosa) or attacks on other religions/atheism that have the stamp of secularism are accepted without proof or source, while facts like islams actions are like – “Where is the proof? Sorry I dint hear you”
In fact, it is such gross injustices and discriminations that drive normal people to fundamentalism. Remember shahbano, which resulted in the rise of BJP. Similarly, you would feel the same if Bal Thackeray (no, i aint his fan, i am talking about equality here) is punished for “flaming communal passions” while terrorists like afzal guru are let free.
Hence I say — secularism = shit. There cannot be any secularism when the other side is not willing to even treat you as human (as stated in koran etc.. do you want proof?)
I do hope people will not ask for proof when someone says that the sun rises in the east.
