Of course, the problem is that the competition is adopting the same tactics instead of differentiating itself. Obviously the original will still sell more.

*more an elaborated strategy bound response with a bit of delay…soon!
Chandu,
Accha, during your Mumbai days. Weel I am sure we will get a reaction from DNA soon.
Jyo,
We await. eh.
well,
I read this loud statement of ascertainment by the so-called leader with sleepy eyes in the morning…n am amused
1.Dramatic or expected rise in the readership for the TOI could be driven by the increase in the base of readers. perhaps, more no.of people have started reading newspapers. Children/Tweens also joined the bandwagon.
2.Could also be increase in multiple newspapers readership in the households
3.In the society that is overloaded by information, many a type of media download their data points over the masses. Gone are the days, where ‘SERIOUS NEWSPAPER’ used to enjoy his or her ritual with a cup of tea. Time-starved and info.overloaded younger generation learnt to ‘BROWSE’ its newspaper
4.’Reading a newspaper’ is different from ‘Browing a newspaper’, the latter is defined by reading or fleeting eyes over chosen or relevant topics n throw away the newspaper like a rag. Well, that’s what I do too!
This means TOI sustained its efforts to cater to the taste of BROWSERS..PAGE 3,A FEW HEALTH TIPS,SOME CHATPATA gossip…viola, paper is customised for you.
Am not ardent fan of this Newspaper, but waking up to one’s familiar newspaper is almost like a ritual, so hard to break. Tomorrow, if I open Deccan Herald in stead of TOI, I feel the uneasiness. perhaps, this franchise is working stronger for the brand.
But there are niche brands that specifically address needs of their consumer segments and doing quite well. Say Mid Day, as chandni said
5.TOI could also be quite aggressive in Business/SME (Small Medium enterprises) segment, more like an enabler in enhancing one’s B2B affairs.
6.Decrease in rural areas indicate the brand is getting a royal beating as literacy levels are increasing in those areas, local NPs could be ruling the roost.
7.One thing that runs positive is about TOI is the language in which the content is presented. Though a bit casual (unlike stiff lipped boardroom and elitist THE HINDU), it talks to the reader in his/her language….reader friendly content as well as organisation of content. no wonder, it is popular amongst women/homemakers..simple n easy to read n urges one to learn new words or language.
8.One critical point:how this brand (Print medium) is faring against the other media…then one would get a fuller pic!
Browsing behavior certainly is a key influencer in moving the crap up the ramp

a bit dampener…
based on my xperience on the brand strategy for its competitor
I had a related post with a different product but still agree with the conclusion.
Jyo,
I should have known! With your advertising background, you would have plenty to say about it. I think the print media is an important point. Even in USA with its history of local newspapers, even publications like NYT arereporting loss of advertisements.
Pat,
KANK! never bothered to see it, but I get your point. But this market is worldwide.
